Wow I thought you did something semi-coherent for once. Turns out it is just an rip of the actual comic Super Mario Adventures. Okay then. Nice try subtly adding Kentaro Takekuma's name next to yours like he helped write the piece above lmao. I guess ripping off works is still second nature for you; although at least you credited the fan magazine.

The traced line draw parts clash pretty bad with the rest of the works. (Although there were some non-traced parts that could use some work, but I have to give you credit there, I think.) A lot of the sprites are too low resolution for close ups like with the toads.

Also I think a lot is lost in this comic being turned into an animation by you. For example you look at the comic of the shot where toad introduces the messy pipes. The original comic shot has depth and complexity that's humorous due to the ridiculousness of pipes.Your shot is flat and looks like it took all of 2 minutes to layout of pipes all at the same angle. Not even twisting around each other. A characterizing shot turned into one that lacks character. There were some nice ideas like the way Mario attached the pipes and certain canned reactions. But it always verges on being another smbz rip. Not something that feels like an adaptation of the sprite world meeting the comic.

I think that's about it, probably more than what I needed to write anyway. I do think this is some of your better work, but that might be because mainly it wasn't written by you. Could have been worse though!

*Behold below a man child's attempt to take criticism. Same as it has been all these years. vvvvvv

If you don't like it, then don't review this!

Legitimately moves me to my core how much heart went into this, fuck yeah. I cannot think of a better testament to the strength of an independent animator. Very much in keeping with Newgrounds tradition, you've aimed to constantly improve yourself (and make ass jokes along the way). Proud have been a part of this, even though the bit of animation I did is a relative drop in the ocean compared to the amazingly long way it is traveled since. lol The explosion after Thanatophobia is kicked gets me every time <3 Great work.

CaffeineClown responds:

You legitimately move me to my core something something lets sex.

Hey Dumbird, I got your message, sorry for the late reply.

Basically, Tj said most of it in terms of reviewing, Although I will try to supplement it in my own way.

I feel like there is more you can do with Andrew as a character. Don't be afraid to build your series around the fact that he doesn't know anything about this new world- I am sure even things like a computer would freak him out! That is probably one of the strongest facets of your series thus far. You seem to be going down a similar path as the anime (Collecting partners). Sometimes, try to deviate from the course of the anime, and maybe focus on the main characters struggle more, or what true purposes the supporting characters serve. Subplots of each episode would be good. I wasn't sure why the rocket broke into the house at the end, or if that was suppose to be a sort of cliff hanger. Like I have mentioned before, developing your bad guy's motives are very important! Give us some insight into upcoming conflict, and avoid vagueness like Tj mentioned. I can't say I learned anymore about Team Darkness now than before. Andrew being a protagonist should want to know more about the world, and not be afraid to ask questions.

Finishing on a positive note, I like what you are doing with the sprites, like the city was well built for example. Things like mudkip and the oddish were cute details. The guy with the white hair had a nice custom sprite too, which you showed me before.

I am glad to hear you are open to suggestions and improving yourself. Because of that, I think you'll continue to get better in your art.

Regards,

Esty

dumbird responds:

Thanks for the review. I got an idea that would make a good excuse for why Andrew hasn't shown his enthusiasm yet.

I'm a big Blade runner fan, it is probably one of my favorite movies. Although I have to say, the graphics in this flash made it hard to watch, being that they are mostly traced bitmaps of photographs. I encourage you to to try an make your own graphics, which would ultimately give you more freedom in achieving things like lip sync, which were held back by the use of traced bitmaps. For some things, it worked well, like the eye which had all kinds of detail. Although this doesn't exactly work for things such as the city or faces which look blob like.

Hope you'll continue to improve,

Esty

cocolongo responds:

thank you... I traced some. mostly after I found out how.. now I ´m learning to make them from scratch .. I hope you like them too.

I missed the Debut! I wanted to see it the moment you uploaded it and be the first vote : <

Anyway, like I told you before I love the Gigi aesthetic. The colors have definitely grown on me since the beginning, as well as the character designs. The dark purples really add to the creepy vibe. The motions, as well as the character movements show you've got some good Frame by frame going like I've said before. I liked the gravity when Golly jumps down from Gigi's shoulder is really nice and bouncy.

Extras were a nice touch too. I don't see many flashes here surprisingly that display concept art and sketches, even alternate auditions by voice actress. I can tell a lot of heart went into this mate

Good work : >

Budj responds:

Thank you kindly! Yeah, there were no tweens in this. I dunno if people noticed or not lol.

I missed the debut? Damn sleep! I need to seriously cut down on that!

But anyway here's my review... repeating what I said before like Budge mentioned

Let me start by saying you really heightened your scenery and backgrounds for this episode. The detailing of objects like the photo that fell on the ground, rain outside the window, background art like signs, gave the flash an atmosphere, making the world seem more real too. That got my attention and it also displayed the hard work you put into this flash. This is usually a huge problem for sprite animators, making most things look like an incoherent google image-fest, but you made custom backgrounds which look like they could actually be from the games. Congrats think you got the idea of an ambient setting down.

For the vector stuff, I think you will learn to improve on as the series progresses, and I think it is good to practice different styles.

My favorite part was Amira's flash-back, living with her relative. I thought the spriting there was a nice touch for some reason.

Well done. :)

teejay-number13 responds:

Thanks, people might not realize it but I got sick of scouting locations from existing Pokemon games so I started making all of my own from tilesets.

Yeah, sleep is a huge waste of time. Actually, I got a lot finished on this because a few days ago I went like 36 hours without sleep. Not because I made myself stay up, I just couldn't sleep.

Overall good effort but a dull experience.

Pacing in the character movements sort of bothered me. in the beginning, you had what was suppose to be a very dramatic scene, but the way the characters moved, talked, even blinked was awkwardly mixed with the context, almost as if it was meant to be a comedy. This sort of deshuffled the flash a bit, even while the script was functioning on a higher level than the other art. Not to say the art was bad, but it was blandish and fell somewhere between a naive color pallet and trying-but-not-knowing how to be dark. Like a Disney channel cartoon meets an dark fantasy-R.L. Stine book(?) This I believe was also transferred into the story-- bluntly being subtle became overly bland. Therefore interacting with the characters became difficult, and what should have been you conveying who they were with little dialog characterized them through the animation as dimensionless.

It seems like you found someone who can write dialog, but try listening to the story better and find your own style among countless other forgettable fables that reflect something worth saying, inspiring a different tradition than good vs evil every single full moon. Critical it may seem, but good for a child's drama not a serious one, which I believe was trying to be attempted.

Nice music, voice acting, sound effects otherwise.

Tyler responds:

Sorry there weren't enough ninteno sprite rip-offs for you.

At first I missed the old animation because of how hilarious the character used to look, although now the improvements made it into an entirely different comedy in a great way and they are still hilarious.

I'll take one of those You've just gotta believe shirts now

Alpha-Nuva responds:

those shirts cost like, 20 bucks. until we can get a cheaper deal, idt it's worth it. and they only come in white.

Abundant

This reminds me of alot of 80's art, with Kieth Herring. The color and creatures, not to mention the tone itself. I'd love to even see you do even a story based on one of these creatures. Highly original

TheBoogley responds:

thanks, I'd love to create a story around them too... one day :)

Nice dramatic shots, good message

For the short period it took you to make, I think that gave some parts a rushed intensity to them. No parts felt stupid or unnecessary either. The message behind this is even more important. It was well executed and believable.

My favorite part was how they used masks to hide other masks, or to fit social appropriateness, and even label eachother as human beings.

Without going to deep here I'd say the delivery of the message was well done.

Pahgawk responds:

Personally, I feel that everyone has a range of masks we wear at times, and I thought the best way to portray that was to literally give people masks on top of more masks :)
Thanks!

My kind of soldier you can ride on my shoulders when you've won.
